The example used in the remainder of this article is a Polycom VVX 410 phone running 5.0.0.6874 firmware, registered externally via an Edge Server to a Lync Server 2013 environment.The following preparation steps do not need to be performed on any devices but are included to illustrate key behavior in the process as well as verify a functional device update service.

With the recent release of UCS 5.0 for Polycom VVX Phones automatic firmware updates are now supported directly from the Lync Device Update service.Add new text by clicking on the "Text" button by dragging the text box to the desired location with your mouse. Click "Preview" to see how your web page looks while you are working on it. Check the web page that you want to update, and click "Edit".Remember to click "Save" every 3 to 5 minutes to save the changes that you have made to your web page. This will take you to the HTML version of your web page. Replace or add text by typing in the sections where the changes are needed.Now that the 5.0.1 maintenance release is available then this and all future releases can be handled natively by the Lync server.The update behavior of the VVX phones is very similar to that of Lync Phone Edition, yet is even more flexible.Updates your Web page with any changes that you save to your map file.

This message will not appear again during the current session, but it will appear the next time you open and save changes to your map file.

Click "Save" when you are finished updating your web page. Add pictures by uploading them through the File Manager, and create image links within the HTML text. Click "Save" when you have finished updating your page.

Click "OK" to save and preview your updated web page. Make sure to click "Save" and "Continue" every 3 to 5 minutes to save the work you have done. You will be directed back to the File Manager's main page.

This is the same functionality which Lync Phone Edition devices have always used for firmware updates and now eliminates the need for a separate provisioning server in most Lync environments leveraging VVX Phones.

Although the 5.0.0 release added the ability to leverage the Device Update service it was not yet possible to actually leverage the feature until a new update was published.
